Designing (Research-Based) Belonging in Computer Science Classrooms
Monday June 15, 2026 9:45am - 10:45am CDT
This session presents findings from a qualitative dissertation study examining how secondary computer science teachers’ classroom design and pedagogical decisions influence female students’ sense of belonging. Using a pedagogical theory and the concept of ambient belonging as a framework, the session highlights how seating arrangements, classroom décor, and instructional practices send powerful messages about who belongs in computer science. Participants will engage with real classroom examples and receive a research-based checklist to help audit and redesign their CS classrooms to be more inclusive, supportive, and engaging for female students.

Robots, Relationships, and Resilience: Integrating SEL and Engineering in Middle School STEM
Monday June 15, 2026 2:00pm - 3:00pm CDT
In this session, I will share how robotics, engineering challenges, and cybersecurity games can strengthen both STEM learning and social-emotional skills in middle school students. Participants will engage in hands-on Sphero BOLT activities and try out Cyber Defender and Cyber Guardian to experience how these tools build teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience. I will provide practical strategies and ready-to-use lessons that boost student engagement while introducing engineering, coding, and cybersecurity concepts. Join me to explore fun, meaningful ways to help students think like innovators and collaborate like leaders.
